BU16 Finalist Santa Clarita Magic Tournament

Congratulations to Joey Kirk and the Boys BU16 team for winning second place this past weekend in the Santa Clarita Magic Tournament. Although early in the season, the boys played technically sound soccer to go undefeated in pool play. The team scored 5 goals in pool play while at the same time keeping a clean sheet. In the semi-final game, the team battled back from a 0 – 1 halftime deficit to beat Palmdale Thunder 2-1. In the finals versus Juventus, the boys gave it their all in 105 degree heat before coming up short 0 - 2. The BU16s are looking forward to their next two tournaments coming up in August…The Apex Premier Cup and the Thousand Oaks Classic.

New Curriculum Sees Results

A little over two weeks after Apex Soccer Club had implemented its new club wide curriculum the effects were clearly shown at the local level. ASC had an impressive showing at the Ventura County Fusion Spring Classic with both the Boys U9 ASC B’00 and Girls U12 ASC G’97 teams having undefeated pool play rounds each earning a spot in the final match of the tournament. Alongside the finalist success was the Girls U14 ASC G’95 team playing up an age group in the U15 bracket qualifying for the semi-final round and the Girls U11 ASC G’98 White and Boys U11 ASC Metrostars teams only missing the elimination rounds by two points.

Each of the above teams can look at their individual and team statistics and see an increase in team play and individual work rate. The curriculum takes the focus off of winning and shifts it to smaller technical and tactical goals set by the coaching staffs. Each of the teams have started to see an increase in connectivity between the players and a better understanding of the tactical goals of the team which has started to translate to the score board.

Congratulations to all the ASC teams for an impressive showing of great soccer over the weekend.

Club Wide Curriculum Announced

Apex SC is announcing the adoption of a club wide curriculum starting March 2010. It has been used the last few years by select teams and has been a huge success in age appropriate development of players. Below is a basic outline of how the curriculum works.

“The curriculum creates clear objective assessments for the players and coaches that guide the training and development of the players with checks and balances to ensure that players are receiving and mastering the fundamental skill sets appropriate for that age and level. Each player is assessed and given very clear feedback in a portfolio that outlines strengths and development areas and then sets goals for them to achieve until the next assessment a few months later.

On the team side the curriculum challenges the team to understand tactically the goals of the group and gives the players transparent expectations that focus on development for long term success of the program.”

Coaching Consistency

  • All coaches teach technically & tactically based on the same club standards
  • All coaches use same language and measurements to assess progress
  • Coaches have direct cross assessment of their team with other teams in club & opponents
  • All coaches have the same team and player development expectations

Individual Player Development

  • Individual players clearly understand expectations for practice and games
  • Fundamental technical ability and team tactics are stressed and based on building block system
  • Long term individual development is the focus
  • Individual progress is recorded through objective assessments
  • Players receive portfolios with player progression updates 3 times per year

Team Development

  • Curriculum challenges players to focus on team tactics and play
  • Team goals are clearly stated and are not score board based
  • Curriculum creates short term goals to develop teams for long term success
